Bought the Sigma 20mm F1.8 but Should Have Saved for a Cannon Instead
I bought the Sigma 20mm f1.8 because I refused to pay the price of the Canon equivalent but in retrospect this was probably not the best thing I could have done. Thinking that I would save some cash and get a great quality lens, I bought the Sigma after only skimming through a few reviews. After testing it extensively, I have come to realize why some people have such an aversion to third party lenses. The Sigma is a disappointment in just about every department. Apart from the build quality, which is top notch the rest of the lens just does not live up to, the previous standards set by Sigma. At least I did not pay too much for it but in hindsight, I would have been better off saving up for the Canon. In the end it turned out to be a very costly lesson for me and judging by how little interest there is from people after I have put it up for sale I guess most of them have done more research than I did.
Tinus De Jongh (1885-1942)
Tinus de Jongh was born in 1885 in Amsterdam, Holland. He was the youngest among four children and his father was the director of a Gymnasium. Tinus started expressing affinity towards art at a very young age. He began drawing and his major work of childhood came at the age 15 when he painted a scene of a blacksmith’s workshop. He completed schooling in 1900 and wanted to learn art. His parents opposed the idea at first but later they let him work as a decorator in Ambachtschool. The time spend here gave him a deep insight into the world of art and he learned different techniques in painting. After coming out with first prize, Tinus found a job as an interior decorator and worked on his techniques in the spare time.
Tinus began painting seriously and his work found many admirers who appreciated his palette and techniques. Tinus’s work focussed around landscapes which showed fine brushwork and natural colours. In 1911, Tinus married Maria Vehoef. Great honour came in 1912, when he was commissioned to do some work depicting the palace and the vicinity.
In 1921, Louis Verhoef, Tinus’s brother- in-law who lived in South Africa paid a visit to him. The visit and the stories that he heard from Louis prompted him to move to South Africa. Sometime later, his family followed him and made South Africa their permanent home. They first stayed in Fish Hoek in the Cape Peninsula. Tinus fell in love with Cape Town and immediately started to take in the breath-taking views in to the canvas. His paintings were quickly gathered up by private collectors, art museums and banks alike.
Tinus soon became famous as an artist and was given an assignment to paint the parliament building. In 1922, his solo exhibition held in Port Elizabeth saw his entire collection being purchased by Herman Sammel. Many assignments by universities and private individuals followed suit as his fame as a great artist began to spread across the continent. A journey to Zimbabwe along with his family on a Caravan provided many opportunities to paint. He produced one of his major works during this time which included depicting the Cango Caves and the Victoria Falls. After his journey, he conducted several exhibitions featuring the numerous works that he did during the trip.
Later in his career, Tinus also proved that he is not only a painter but also a versatile artist. He was adept at print making as well as doing sculpture. His skills at print making are evident in the numerous products in which he captured many buildings of historical importance.
Tinus became fascinated with bright lights and later in his career and completely transformed his method by dropping the darker palette and adopting a new luminous one. He also initiated into the style of impressionistic painting and produced numerous landscapes during the years prior to his death.
Tinus de Jongh died of lung cancer in the year 1942. He was 52 years old. During his not so long life, he was able to bring his work to the level that of masters and found a place among the South Africa’s prominent artists.
